Mountain Hiking Precautions

As part of Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park, the entirety of Mt. Apoi is strictly protected by law. Please keep the following points in mind when hiking.

Stay on the trail.
Walking off the trail is strictly prohibited by law.
Do not collect plants, animals, or rocks.
Collecting plants, animals, rocks, or other natural materials is strictly forbidden by law.
Use caps on your trekking poles.
Uncapped trekking poles can damage precious alpine plants.
Bring a toilet kit.
Toilet booths are available below the fifth-stage mountain lodge. Relieving yourself outside the designated areas can harm the growth of alpine plants.
Prevent the spread of invasive species.
To stop the spread of invasive species, check your footwear for any seeds, and remove them before starting your hike. These resilient species can threaten the habitat of native alpine plants.
Avoid bringing pets.
Refrain from bringing pets on your hike, as they may disturb other hikers.
Beware of dangerous wild animals on the mountain.
Carry a bear bell or bear spray, and avoid approaching hornets, pit vipers, and other animals.
Register in the hiking log before you start your hike.
There is a hiking log at the trailhead. To ensure your safety in the event of an emergency, be sure to fill it out.

Mt. Apoi toilets (toilet booths)

Two toilet booths are available on Mt. Apoi below the fifth-stage mountain lodge from early April to late October. Relieving yourself outside of the designated areas can seriously damage alpine plants and lead to environmental destruction.
To protect this precious natural environment and ensure an enjoyable hike for everyone, please be mindful of proper etiquette.
