Samani Dam

Cherry blossoms

Samani Dam, a 44-meter-high concrete gravity dam, was completed in 1975 by the Hokkaido Government for flood control at the lower reaches of the Samani River.
In spring, the dam is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing, with the flowers in full bloom from early to mid-May. It is one of the last places in Japan for the cherry blossom season to arrive.

The Hokkaido Government issues and distributes dam cards for each dam under its management.
For Samani Dam, please note that the distribution locations vary depending on the season and the day of the week.

Distribution locations:

Weekday mornings:

Weekends and holidays:

Ohonai Waterfall

Ohonai Waterfall is located on the east side of Taisho Tunnel, Geosite D4 in the Hidaka Yabakei Area. "Ohonai" means "deep stream." In midwinter, the waterfall freezes completely, and when snowfall is light, the frozen cascade appears even more striking against the surrounding landscape.

Autumn foliage at Horomankyo Gorge

The Horomankyo Area, known for its visible peridotite outcrops, is also a popular spot for autumn foliage.
The area includes the remnants of the old Power Station No. 1 Dam, where the combination of the built structure, the surrounding forest, and the Horoman River creates a photogenic contrast. You can also visit Horoman Natural Park, established in 1974 on land donated by the late Eiichi Sugimoto, a native of Horoman and former Speaker of the Hokkaido Legislative Assembly. The park was developed by the Samani Rotary Club.

Apoi Arboretum

As part of a project commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Hokkaido's prefectural forests, the Apoi Arboretum was developed by the Hokkaido Government in 1956 to create forests cherished by residents and to promote proper knowledge of forestry.
The arboretum, spanning 6 hectares, features not only natural woodlands but also 1,500 trees of approximately 100 species from within and beyond Hokkaido, including from foreign countries.

Fuyushima, Samani
Admission:
Free of charge, but please register in the logbook upon entry.
