Mt. Apoi Hiking Information

Located near the southern end of the Hidaka Mountains, Mt. Apoi formed from the Horoman peridotite complex, which originated when the upper mantle several tens of kilometers underground was exposed to the Earth’s surface during the formation of the Hidaka Mountains as a result of tectonic plate collisions about 13 million years ago.
Despite its relatively low elevation of 810 meters, Mt. Apoi’s unique geological and harsh climatic conditions have fostered a diverse array of alpine plants, including endemic species such as hidakaso (Callianthemum miyabeanum) and ezokozorina (Hypochaeris crepidioides), which are found only on this mountain.
