Physical characteristics:
This perennial grows to approximately 30 cm in height. The stems have a reddish tinge, branch frequently, and bend alternately at the leaf nodes. The leaves are ovate with petioles, are somewhat thick, and are pointed at the tip. The calyces are divided into five segments that resemble petals.

It is also found on coastal slopes, grasslands, cliffs, and other areas.
Japanese name origin:
The “soba” comes from the flower’s resemblance to grains of buckwheat (Japanese: soba) (Fagopyrum esculentum). As for “oyama,” there are various theories, such as that it refers to another name for Mount Hakusan or that it simply means “high mountain.”
