Physical characteristics:
This perennial grows to approximately 10 cm in height. The leaves grow near the base and have serrated edges, and their undersides have a purplish tint. The flowers bloom from the bottom upward.

Japanese name origin:
The “kuwagata” shares its etymology with stag beetles, also called “kuwagata” in Japanese. Both names come from their resemblance to another “kuwagata”: the crest attached to samurai helmets worn during battles in the Sengoku period (the period of warring states in Japan).
