Physical characteristics:
This perennial grows to approximately 15 cm in height. The leaves are thick, glossy, and arranged in whorls of three. The undersides of the leaves and the stem are dark purple.

mid-May to early June

rocky areas in and above the Umanose area

a quasi-endemic variant species
Japanese name origin:
The “ezokisumire” means “yellow violet of Hokkaido.” The “sumire” comes from the flower’s resemblance to a sumiire, a carpenter’s inking tool used for marking wood.
