kitayotsubashiogama
Orobanchaceae
Pediculais chamissonis var. hokkaidoensis
- Physical characteristics:
- This perennial grows to approximately 30 cm in height. The leaves are typically arranged in whorls of four and are pinnately divided. The flowers bloom in several tiers at the upper part of the stem, and the corollas bend sharply.
- Blooming period:
- late May to June
- Habitat:
- areas in and above the Umanose area
- Other information:
- There is a theory that the sight of seawater being boiled in cauldrons to make salt on the beach was considered beautiful. The phrase “even the leaves are beautiful” (ha made utsukushii) evolved into “a beautiful sight on the beach” (hama de utsukushii), and eventually, the beauty became associated with the salt cauldrons (shiogama) themselves.
