Physical characteristics:
This perennial grows to approximately 20 cm in height. The basal leaves are biternate, meaning each leaf is divided into groups of three leaflets twice, with the leaflets being fan-shaped. The inner white parts of the flower are petals, while the outer purple parts are sepals.
Blooming period:
late May to mid-June
Habitat:
rocky areas in and above the Umanose area
Other information:
It is considered an ancestral species from which other species of Aquilegia evolved.
Japanese name origin:
The “odamaki” comes from the flower’s resemblance in shape to an odamaki, a spool once used for spinning thread.
