Event: Making windchimes from glass buoys and sea shells

During the Obon holidays, we held a crafting event where we made windchimes from glass fishing buoys and sea shells. First, we observed obsidian which is a type of rock made from glass, and had the participants compare peridotite and obsidian rock flakes under a polarized light microscope. Next, the participants chose their favorite shells and made the chime part. Many people chose the butterfly-shaped shells and the umbrella-shaped limpet shells

The participants also had an opportunity to look up the different types of sea shells in an illustrated encyclopedia.

Everyone was surprised to learn that in the past, glass buoys were used for fishing instead of modern plastic ones.
