The translucent gray outcrop is chert. Like limestone, it is formed from dead marine organisms – primarily radiolarian and sponge remains and other types of organic matter accumulated on the ocean floor. It was brought to the area on an oceanic plate in the same way as limestone.

Chert used to serve as flint, among other uses, due to its hardness. Chipping it with a hammer produces sparks.
